Screenplay by Daniel
Yost
from a novel by James Fogle
An epic on-the-run love story in the vein of BONNIE AND CLYDE, but
here the hero, Mel, kills no one and his adventures are loosely
based on the life of James Fogle, author of the novel, DRUGSTORE
COWBOY. Mel sees his life radically change when he meets Terry,
a compassionate but lonely nurse who saves him after he is badly
wounded. Their life together becomes a chaotic and unpredictable
odyssey, equal parts comedy and drama, after they go on the road
and meet up with Mel's old pals. Throughout the story, Mel is doggedly
pursued by his old nemesis, Detective Fishback, who grew up in the
same hometown. Fishback wants to make his name on Mel's capture,
then write a book and split the profits with Mel. Or so he says.
Set in 1957, the story comes to a head in the Nevada desert when
the principals meet in the vicinity of an open-air atomic bomb test.
